Constitution

Mission:
The TRiO Student Leaders will provide opportunities for students to learn about leadership by exploring their personal leadership potential and developing that potential in service of others.

Vision:
Students in TRiO Student Leaders will develop personal leadership skills that will serve them and allow them to serve the greater good.

Goal:
The goal of TRiO Student Leaders is to empower students, create common understanding and acceptance of individual differences, and provide opportunities for self-discovery and personal growth while inspiring passionate commitment to the service of others.


Constitution
Article 1-Name

Section 1. The name of this organization shall be “TRiO Student Leaders”

Article 2-Purpose

Section 1. To provide an organization that supports opportunities for students who are the first generation in their family to attend college, have limited financial income, and/or have a documented disability to learn about leadership and develop their individual leadership potential.

Section 2. Build connections and a strong sense of community between individuals in the previously mentioned populations.

Article 3-Membership

Section 1. Membership requirements will be non-discriminatory and all persons will be treated in a fair and equitable manner in accordance with Minnesota Statute 363.

Section 2. At least 2/3 of active members must be currently enrolled at WSU.

Section 3. All Winona State University students with an interest in developing leadership skills and empowering first generation students, students with limited income, and students with disabilities are welcome to participate in this club.

Article 4-Officers and Elections

Section 1. Leadership nomination requirements will be non-discriminatory and all persons will be treated in a fair and equitable manner in accordance with Minnesota Statute 363.

Section 2. Leadership Positions include the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Representative/Public Relations Officer

Section 3. At the September meeting, nominations for leadership positions will be accepted. Any person can nominate himself or herself for an available position. Open discussion between the candidate and club membership will be held online for 7 days prior to the election. On the 8th day, an e-mail will be sent from the advisor asking members to reply electronically with their votes for leadership positions within 24 hours. The advisor will tally the votes and another e-mail will be sent to notify members of the outcome of the election.

Section 4. All officers shall serve from the time of their installation to the end of the WSU academic year.

Section 5. Upon finding grounds for dismissal, any person holding office may call for a closed session of the officers with the exception of the one in question to meet and discuss the prospective for removing that officer. In all matters concerning the removal of an officer, a consensus decision to remove must be reached by all officers except the one under investigation.

Section 6. In the case of the vacancy of the president, the vice president will assume all presidential responsibilities. If a position under the presidency is left vacant, it shall be filled by a majority vote of the members at a meeting held within one month after the vacancy has occurred.

Article 5-Meetings

Section 1. Meetings will be held on a monthly basis unless otherwise specified with a minimum of 24 hours notice. Sub-Committee meetings will be held following the monthly meeting and may meet more frequently as dictated by their assigned tasks.

Article 6-Funding

Section 1. Secretary/Treasurer will be responsible for tracking and maintaining the club budget and funds.

Section 2. The TRiO Student Leaders club will pay for any club fees required for guest speakers, food, beverages, and public relations. Transportation to and from events will be provided by volunteering members unless otherwise arranged by the executive committee.

Section 3. “All money received from the Student Life funds will be held in a WSU Business office account.”

Section 4. “In the event of the dissolution of the club, all Student Life funds will be returned to the Student Activities Fund Committee of Student Senate for re-appropriation.”

Article 7-Amendment

Section 1. Any member may propose an amendment to the club constitution at the monthly meetings.

Section 2. Amendments may be approved by 2/3 majority of the active membership. Active membership is defined as attending more than half of the club meetings during the current academic year.

Section 3. “The TRiO Student Leaders Constitution must be resubmitted for ratification to the WSU Student Senate at least every two years.”

Article 8-Advisor

Section 1. The advisor for this club will be Kim Dehlin Zeiher, Academic Advisor/Leadership Coordinator for WSU in Student Support Services.

Section 2. The duties for the advisor include but are not limited to: attending regular meetings, maintain contact with club and leadership, track the club budget in conjunction with the responsible party, maintain current contact information with WSU Student Senate.

Section 3. The advisor shall have full access to the club Business Office
Account.

Article 9-Committees

Section 1. Standing committees include: a projects committee (reports to the president) and an events committee (reports to the vice president). Any member(s) of the club may join these committees.

Section 2. All officers have the ability to appoint committees at their discretion but will be required to fill out a “creating committee” form to turn into the president for review. Committees will be organized to carry out basic club functions. The officer who creates the committee will be responsible to oversee it and report to the president and the membership on its activities.
